Handling and storage
Guidance for keeping reference material within specification from the moment it arrives to the moment it is disposed of.
On receipt
Material ships ambient in insulated packaging, which is appropriate for a lyophilized powder across a short transit window. Inspect the vial for an intact crimp seal and confirm that the lot code on the vial matches the certificate. Transfer to -20 °C the same day.
Long term storage
Store at -20 °C, desiccated and protected from light. Lyophilized material is stable for extended periods under those conditions. Allow a vial to equilibrate to room temperature before opening, otherwise atmospheric moisture will condense onto cold powder and the cake will take up water.
Freeze-thaw
Repeated freeze-thaw cycles degrade material in solution. Where a study requires solution over time, prepare single use aliquots rather than returning a stock to the freezer repeatedly. Record the number of cycles any aliquot has seen.
Weighing and transfer
Lyophilized cake is light and carries static. Weigh on a balance with a draught shield, use antistatic tools, and record the actual mass transferred rather than assuming the nominal vial content. Nominal content is the specification, not a guarantee of the exact mass in any individual vial.
Copper complexes
Copper-bound compounds are photosensitive and will discolour on prolonged light exposure. Keep them in amber storage or wrapped, and note that colour change is a handling observation rather than a purity measurement.
Disposal
Dispose of unused material and contaminated consumables as laboratory chemical waste according to your institution's waste stream and local regulation. Do not return material to us for disposal.
